A Newcastle City Council Regeneration Project
One of the main obstacles to overcome in regenerating the Lower Ouseburn Valley is the River Ouseburn itself.
At low tide the muddy and sometimes foul smelling bed of the river is revealed.
In 2001 the City Council completed a study into how best to manage the water environment of the Valley.
It was decided to construct a tidal barrage and navigation lock.
Work on the barrage and lock got underway in March 2008, with an expected completion date of May 2009.
