A weekly market has been held on this site since 1736
There was a time when you could buy almost anything here
Furniture, fresh meat poultry and fish, crockery, toys, clothing.
You name it, you could get it here.
While parting with your cash, you would be entertained by an assortment of
buskers, fire-eaters, magicians and the act that I remember best, the
escapologist.
Sadly the market is now in decline. A handful of stalls, compared with
what there used to be, selling very little else except cheap clothing, CD's and fast food.
I would really like to show some photos of the market as it was in it's heyday.
If anyone reading this has any such photos, and would allow me to
display them here, please get in touch. "chris@monkchester.co.uk"
