Said to be Europe's largest travelling fun fair,
the Hoppings was founded in 1882 as a Temperance Festival and takes place
on Newcastle's Town Moor each year during the last week (actually the last
ten days) in June.
The name is probably derived from hoppen the Anglo-Saxon word for fair or
dance.
